The idea of a community purchase of the Post Office and current building has been discussed by a number of people over recent times.  We are proposing a community owned option containing a Post Office, Shop and Cafe within the historic heart of the old village.  The current building already houses the existing post office and shop, also offers the opportunity to re-open a cafe. This is one solution but there may be alternatives.

There are a number of key factors to consider here:

​

• The current post office building has been on the market for some time as a going concern, but has now gained planning permission for convertion into a SINGLE RESIDENTIAL UNIT with NO RETAIL or COMMERCIAL use. If this happens, it's gone for good as a shop and cafe in this location.​​

• There is a proposal (NOT granted planning permission) for another housing development with retail/commercial units at Stogursey Lane, the other side of the A39 from the main village. This raises the question of what do local people want for the future of Nether Stowey. ​​​

​​

• Should the Stowey Community Space group be looking at alternative sites within the old village?​

 

The Parish Council held a consultation on 22nd February 2025, which was extremely well attended. This consultation was asking the question of whether local people wanted to see new houses plus retail facility built on farmland over the other side of the A39.  The results of this demonstrated the resident community would like to preserve the historic heart of Nether Stowey. Our mission therefore remains to offer the community the chance to keep the post office, shop and a cafe in the centre of the old village, owned by the community FOR the community.
